Description

This unique playing cards exhibits a perfect reproduction of Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) folk painting called Minhwa. Minhwa represents Korean ancestors’ wishing for wealth, happiness, success and longevity. The paintings show the austere wishes to get married with beautiful love, breed many children, have the children succeed in their lives, live a long life with good health and happiness. Minhwa is an art form used to decorate the households and environs of the masses. In contrast to monochromatic paintings done by Confucius scholars and titled court painters, which revered refinement and formalism, folk paintings ignored rules of perspective and composition and the works have a lovely abstract quality, combined with freshness and a sense of whimsy. The folk paintings had the more functional purpose of celebrating good fortune, health and longevity. The folk painters drew their subject matter from shamanism, Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism, incorporating landscape and nature imagery as well as portraits of religious figures. The most remarkable characteristics of Korean folk paintings are their dynamic composition, the use of bold colors and simplified patterns, and the energetic and whimsical visualization of their forms, without much concern for reality. Because of these unique features Minhwa is both studied and cherished around the world. 54 poker cards all together consist of representative Korean folk paintings including Unyong Do (painting of clouds and dragons), Songhak Do (painting of pine trees and cranes), Bonghwang Do (painting of phoenixes), Moran Do (painting of peony blossom), Hwajo Do (painting of flowers and birds), Eohae Do (painting of sea creatures), Chaekga Do (painting of books).

What an absolutely lovely deck of cards. The package came in good condition, and the product itself was undamaged. They're much sturdy than they seem at first glance. Great shuffle capability. The plastic also has a nice grain to it so the cards don't stick. I'm a rather careful person, so all of my things last a long time. Even stuff people think isn't durable, so I'm sorry I can't really comment on how well they'll hold up over time. I would definitely recommend these. I was originally going to pick up a cheap pack of Bicycle cards to play games at home with, but these were so much cooler. As an art lover, I really appreciated the use of minhwa art. It's not something you see everyday on a pack of cards. The fun part about minhwa art is that it's Korean folk art that features images that have a very particular symbolic meaning. In this case, for blessings of good fortune, fertility, happiness, etc. So in a way, whomever came up with this idea put in a nice little dual meaning to every game played. In a way, the artist is wishing for you to be well. Which I think is a lovely little story to tell if you're gifting these to someone. It makes giving a gift like a pack of cards into something a bit more meaningful because you can share some history and learn some new things about art.I also went looking to see if other retailers sell similar cards because I wanted to see just how unique this design was. So far I can't find anything. To me, these seem like a neat little gem to pick up if you're a collector.A big thanks to the company for providing these. They're now my first pack of cards in my own collection. I just thought they were so cool, I decided I wanted to find more just like them. ^_^Bought for a gift. He loved them.no tuck case, need to also acquire a plastic card case to "hold" the deck.Beautiful deck of cards. Each has a different image on the face. Unfortunately they aren't wrapped in cellophane, so that when Amazon slaps their sticker on it it's applied directly to the box making removing the sticker a risky proposition if you wish to preserve the box.I wish, the box that it came in was more durable. It was difficult to take out of the box and it tore. The price was affordable. The cards were beautiful.Beautiful cards. Each card has a unique full color illustration. The cards feel good and play well - they slide and fan and shuffle just as you would hope.Gifted to my mom for the holidays, she loves them. Beautiful images on the cards themselves but unlike a lot of other painted cards the numbers are super easy to read. These are beautiful and ornate and elevate any card game. Love them. Gifted them to my grandma for Christmas and she loved them too! They look even better in person and the cards are sturdy. Would buy as a gift for friends because they are just nice to look at.Je collectionne les jeux de cartes pour la joie de mirer l'art de différents pays ou pour apprécier la poésie des images.Beautiful cards. My son was very happy with them.凄くきれいと思う
